Pennsylvania Provincial Council facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Pennsylvania Provincial Council was an important group that helped run the Province of Pennsylvania from 1682 to 1776. This council was like a part of the government, similar to how the British Parliament worked, especially like the House of Lords in England.

In 1683, a document called the Frame of Government of Pennsylvania set up the rules for the council. It said the council would have between 18 and 72 members. These members came from different counties across the province. The council had a lot of power. They could end meetings of the General Assembly, which was another part of the government. They could also lead when the Governor or Lieutenant Governor were away. Plus, they could create courts and choose people to be judges.

Where the Council Met

The Pennsylvania Provincial Council met in different places over the years.

Early Meeting Spots

Before 1753, the Council and the Assembly (another government group) did not have one main building. They met in various spots around Philadelphia. These places included Quaker meeting houses and even private homes. The very first government meeting happened on October 28, 1682, in a town called Chester, Pennsylvania.

Meeting at Independence Hall

After 1753, the government found a more permanent home. They started meeting in a building that is now famous as Independence Hall. This building became a key place for important decisions in Pennsylvania's history.
