The Penobscot Salmon Club is a special private fishing club located in Brewer, Maine. It sits right on the banks of the Penobscot River. This club is very old, starting in 1887 and officially becoming a club in 1894. It's actually the oldest fishing club in the entire United States!
The club's buildings, which were built in 1923, are important because they show what a 19th-century outdoor club was like. Because of its history, the Penobscot Salmon Club was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it's a place worth protecting for future generations.

Discovering the Penobscot Salmon Club
The Penobscot Salmon Club is on a four-acre piece of land. This land is mostly covered with trees. It's located north of downtown Brewer. If you look across the river, it's roughly opposite the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The Perfect Fishing Spot
The club's location is special because it's next to a shallow part of the Penobscot River. This area is known as a "shoal." For a very long time, this spot has been famous for having lots of fish, especially salmon. It's a great place for fishing!
The Clubhouse Building
The main building at the club was built in 1923. It's a single-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof, called a gable roof, and its outside walls are covered with wooden shingles. The main door is at one end of the building. Along the side facing the river, there's a long covered porch. Inside, the building is open. You can find lockers there to store gear and racks to hold fishing rods.
A Look at the Club's History
People have been fishing in an organized way at this spot since 1887. That's when a large clubhouse was first built here. The fishing club officially became a group in 1894. The building you see today is smaller than the first one. It was built in 1923 to replace the original clubhouse.
A Special Tradition: Salmon for the President
The Penobscot Salmon Club has a very cool tradition. Every fishing season, the very first salmon caught is sent to the President of the United States! This shows how important and historic the club is.
Future Plans for the Club
There are plans for the club's property to become home to a museum. This museum will be all about the Atlantic salmon and how people have fished for them over the years. It will help teach visitors about this important fish and the history of fishing in the area.
