Penokee was a small, unnamed community in Ashland County, Wisconsin, United States. It was located within the township of Morse. Today, Penokee no longer exists as a town.

Where Was Penokee Located?

The old community of Penokee was found south of County Highway GG. It was just a short distance west of the railway at a place called the Penokee Gap. This spot was about 1.75 miles (2.8 kilometers) west-southwest of the town of Mellen. The Canadian National Railway line runs through this area.

The Name Penokee

The name Penokee comes from a Native American word. This word is apinikan. It means "wild potato ground." This suggests that wild potatoes might have grown there long ago.

Penokee on Maps

Even though Penokee is no longer a community, its name still appears on some maps. It was marked on local property maps until 1992. You can still find Penokee marked on maps from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
