The native forest is home to large southern beech trees, known as Nothofagus species. You can also see conifers here. Look closely for perching plants and epiphytes. These are plants that grow on other plants, but they do not harm them.

In early summer, you might spot many New Zealand ground orchids. These are called Pterostylis banksii. They grow along the walking tracks. The Maori name for this special orchid is tutukiwi. This means "beak of a kiwi" because of its shape.
How to Get to Penzance Bay
To reach Penzance Bay, you need to take Archers Road. This road turns off from Tennyson Inlet Road. The turn-off is a little north of Rai Valley. Penzance Bay is about an hour and 15 minutes drive from Nelson.
Life in the Penzance Settlement
The Penzance settlement is quite small. There are only a few people who live there all the time. Most of the homes in the settlement are baches. These are holiday homes where people stay for vacations.
