The Peoples Academy is a special high school located in Morrisville, Vermont. It's known for its history and unique buildings.
In 1996, the school's main building, an observatory, and a bandshell were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical places. These buildings were given to the school by two generous people: George C. Grout and Alexander Hamilton Copley. Peoples Academy is the local public high school and has a beautiful design called Classical Revival architecture.
About Peoples Academy
The Peoples Academy campus sits on a hill at the east end of Main Street. From here, you can see great views of Morrisville village. The main school building is made of red brick and has two stories. It has a flat roof and pretty limestone decorations.
The front of the building is wide and balanced, with five main parts. The parts on the very ends stick out a little. They have three windows and special corner designs. The ground floor of these sections has no windows, but a round stone panel in the middle. The sections next to these each have five windows.
The center part of the building is where the main entrance is. It has single windows on each side of the door on the ground floor. Upstairs, there are double windows. This central part is framed by tall, fancy columns. On top, there's a railing with a clock built into it.
Over the years, some newer parts have been added to the main school building.
Other Buildings on Campus
Besides the main school, there are two other important buildings:
- The Grout Observatory is a round brick building used for looking at stars. George C. Grout donated it in 1930.
- The Community Bandshell is a wooden structure. Since 1930, it has been used for school graduation ceremonies and other events.
A Special Gift
The land and the first building for Peoples Academy were a gift from Alexander Hamilton Copley. He grew up in Lamoille County and became very rich in Boston, Massachusetts, working in the medicine business.
Mr. Copley first bought the land to build a house for himself and his wife. Sadly, his wife became sick and passed away before they could build their dream home. Instead, he decided to give the property to the town. He also paid for the construction of the school building. It looks almost exactly like another high school building from that time in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
