Peoples State Forest is a fantastic place in Connecticut. It covers about 3,059 acres, which is a huge area! You can find it along the West Branch Farmington River in the town of Barkhamsted. This forest is managed for many things, like growing trees, protecting animals, and offering fun activities for everyone.

A Look Back in Time

Peoples State Forest officially opened in October 1924. A special event was held by the river, and about 3,000 people, including Governor Templeton, came to celebrate.

In the 1930s, a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped make the forest even better. The CCC was a program during the Great Depression that gave young men jobs. They built roads and trails, making it easier to explore the forest. They also built a special nature museum. The inside of the museum was made from chestnut trees that had died from a disease.

Fun Things to Do

Peoples State Forest is a great spot for outdoor adventures. You can go hiking, hunting, fishing, and even snowmobiling when there's enough snow!

The Nature Museum

One cool spot in the forest is the Peoples State Forest Nature Museum. This building is made of stone and was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum teaches you all about the plants and animals that live in the area. You can see displays of animal mounts, skulls, minerals, and even insect collections. It also has exhibits about the first people who lived here, early settlers, logging, and how the CCC helped build the park.

The museum was open from 1935 to 1942. It then closed for many years but reopened in 1992 as the Stone Museum. In 2007, its name was changed back to the Peoples State Forest Nature Museum.

Exploring the Trails

If you love hiking, you're in luck! The forest has about 10 miles of trails. These trails are part of the blue-blazed Peoples State Forest Trails system, which means they are marked with blue blazes (paint marks) on trees to guide you. It's a perfect way to explore the beautiful nature of the forest.
