Alfonza "Pep" Hamilton (born September 19, 1974) is a well-known American football coach. He has worked with many teams, including being the head coach and general manager for the DC Defenders in the XFL. He also coached quarterbacks for the Los Angeles Chargers. Most recently, he was the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans in the National Football League (NFL).
Pep's College Days as a Player
Playing Quarterback at Howard
Pep Hamilton grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. He went to West Charlotte High School. After high school, he played quarterback for Howard University from 1993 to 1996. While at Howard, Pep was recognized for his hard work in school. He earned the team's scholar-athlete award in both 1995 and 1996. This award shows he was great at football and also a strong student.
Pep's Journey as a Coach
Starting Out in Coaching
Pep Hamilton began his coaching career at his old school, Howard University. He started as the team's quarterbacks coach. Later, he was promoted to be the team's offensive coordinator. After his time at Howard, Pep moved on to coach in the National Football League. He worked with the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers. On March 5, 2007, he joined the Chicago Bears as their quarterbacks coach.
Coaching in College Football
In 2010, Pep Hamilton took a job at the University of New Mexico Lobos. He was going to be a co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach there. However, another opportunity came up quickly. He left New Mexico before the season started to become the wide receivers coach at Stanford. In 2011, he was promoted again. He became the offensive coordinator under the new head coach, David Shaw.
Coaching in the NFL
With the Indianapolis Colts
In 2013, Pep Hamilton became the new offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts. This was a special move because it reunited him with Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck was a quarterback Pep had coached at Stanford. They also worked with other former Stanford players like tight end Coby Fleener and wide receiver Griff Whalen. Pep stayed with the Colts until November 3, 2015, when he left the team.
With the Cleveland Browns
In January 2016, Pep Hamilton joined the Cleveland Browns. He took on two important roles there. He was named the associate head coach and also the quarterbacks coach.
Coaching the Michigan Wolverines
In 2017, Pep moved to coach college football again. He signed a four-year contract with the Michigan Wolverines. He worked as an assistant head coach and helped coordinate the team's passing game.
Leading the DC Defenders (XFL)
In February 2019, Pep Hamilton took on a big leadership role. He joined the XFL's DC Defenders. He became both their head coach and general manager for the 2020 XFL season.
Helping the Los Angeles Chargers
In April 2020, Pep returned to the NFL. He joined the Los Angeles Chargers as their quarterbacks coach for the 2020 NFL season. He played a key part in the success of quarterback Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert went on to win the offensive rookie of the year award that season.
Working with the Houston Texans
On March 10, 2021, Pep Hamilton was hired by the Houston Texans. He started as their passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. On February 7, 2022, he was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Texans. After that season, he moved on from the team.
