Pepe Soriano was a famous actor, director, and writer from Argentina. He was born on September 25, 1929, and passed away on September 13, 2023. He was known for his many roles in plays, movies, and TV shows.
Early Life and First Steps in Acting
Pepe Soriano was born and grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started studying law at the University of Buenos Aires. But he loved acting more! He joined a theater group there and soon left law school to focus on plays. His first play, "The Enchanted Sweater," came out in 1950.
In 1953, he made his first professional appearance. This was in a play called A Midsummernight's Dream at the famous Colón Theatre. He started acting on television in 1954. Soon, he played main characters in many important plays in Argentina. These included "The Tenth Man" and "Would You Like to Play with Me?". His performances earned him top awards in Argentine entertainment in 1964.
Pepe Soriano also took on smaller roles in Argentine movies. Later, he got lead roles in films like Tute Cabrero (1968) and Juan Lamaglia y Sra. (1970).
A Career Full of Roles
During the 1970s, Pepe Soriano acted in many historical dramas. These were movies based on real events from the past. He played the main character in the play Lisandro (1971). He was praised for his role as Senator Lisandro de la Torre. This senator was known for speaking out against powerful landowners in the 1930s.
After Argentina became a democracy again in 1973, Soriano played a German character named Schultz. This was in the movie Rebellion in Patagonia (1974). This film showed the harsh treatment of sheep ranch workers in 1922. Because of this movie, Soriano faced problems and moved to Spain in 1977.
Later, he returned to Argentina. He starred in the movie Granma (1979). This film was based on a famous play. In 1980, artists in Argentina started a movement called the Argentine Open Theatre. Pepe Soriano was one of the first and most well-known people to join. Their first festival was a big success. However, their theater was bombed a week later.
When democracy returned to Argentina in 1983, artists could create works that talked about the difficult times before. Soriano played the lead in the 1984 film Another Hope. This was a horror story set in a factory, which was a way to talk about the problems industrial workers faced. He also played Senator Lisandro de la Torre again in the movie An Assassination in the Senate (1984). This film was about an attempt to murder the senator in 1935.
In later years, Soriano acted less in theater. He continued to take main roles in movies and on Argentine television. He also appeared on Spanish television. He was in a popular Spanish comedy show called Night Pharmacy in the 1990s.
His kind, grandfatherly look made him popular for historical movies. These included Funes, a Great Love (1993) and A Shadow, You Shall Soon Be (1994). He also played a dying idealist in the Uruguayan film El último tren ("The Last Train", 2002). This movie criticized business deals that were not good for the country.
Pepe Soriano also explored his Jewish heritage in his work. He acted in the play Visiting Mr. Green. In this play, he teaches a lesson about family to a parole officer. He also appeared in the Chilean film El brindis ("The Toast", 2007). In this movie, a Jewish-Chilean father tries to bring his family closer together.
