Osmundea pinnatifida is a type of red alga commonly known as pepper dulse. Even though it's called a red alga, its color can change a lot. You might see it as yellow-buff, a dark red, or even almost black!

This small seaweed is found in many places along the rocky shores of Britain and Europe. It likes areas that are somewhat protected from big waves.

What is Pepper Dulse?

Pepper dulse is a small ocean plant that grows in clumps. Its branches can reach up to 8 centimeters (about 3 inches) long. It attaches itself to rocks using a special disc-shaped base called a holdfast. This holdfast also sends out small root-like parts called stolons to help it stay put.

The main parts of the plant, called fronds, are flat. Inside, they have a thick layer of cells called the medulla. This is covered by two outer layers of cells called the cortex. The branches grow flat and spread out from the sides, usually branching once or twice. Each tip of a branch has a small groove.

How Pepper Dulse Reproduces

Like many plants, pepper dulse has a way to make new plants. The fronds produce special parts that release male cells, called gametes. These are found on the very end branches.

Other parts, called cystocarps, grow on the tips of the branches. These structures help protect the developing plant. Pepper dulse also forms tiny spores, called tetraspores, on its last three sets of branches. These spores can grow into new plants.

Where Pepper Dulse Lives

You can often find pepper dulse growing in clumps on rocks. It likes to live in rock pools in the lower part of the shore, where the tide goes out. However, you won't find it below the lowest tide line. It prefers to be in areas that are exposed to the air when the tide is out, but still get wet regularly.

Where to Find Pepper Dulse

Pepper dulse is common around Ireland and Great Britain, including the Shetland Islands. You can also find it further south, all the way to Portugal and in the Mediterranean.

Uses of Pepper Dulse

People in Scotland and the Channel Islands sometimes collect pepper dulse. They dry it and use it as a spice. It's known for having a unique flavor that tastes a bit like curry!
