The Story of Pepsi One
How Pepsi One Began
Pepsi One was first introduced on June 30, 1998. This happened right after a new artificial sweetener was approved. This sweetener was called acesulfame potassium, sometimes known as Ace-K. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave its approval for it to be used in food and drinks.
PepsiCo quickly announced Pepsi One. The drink arrived in stores a few months later, in October 1998. The first version of Pepsi One used two sweeteners: aspartame and acesulfame potassium.
Pepsi One's Early Days
This new drink was inspired by a product called Pepsi Max, which was sold in other countries. However, Pepsi One was made with a special taste just for the United States.
When Pepsi One first launched, it had a simple advertising message: "just one calorie." Later, a comedian named Tom Green became the face of the drink. He appeared in many TV commercials starting in April 1999.
Changes to the Logo and Sweeteners
For a while, Pepsi One was the only Pepsi drink that still used an older logo. All other Pepsi drinks had updated to a newer design. Eventually, Pepsi One's logo was also changed to match the other products.
In March 2005, PepsiCo announced another change. They started adding sucralose to Pepsi One. This was done to make the drink taste more like a full-sugar cola.
Why Pepsi One Was Discontinued
Pepsi One was stopped in mid-2015. This happened after its sister drink, Diet Pepsi, changed its sweeteners. PepsiCo explained that Pepsi One was no longer widely available. They decided to remove it from the market to make their product choices more efficient.
Pepsi One had about 57.1 milligrams of caffeine in a 12-ounce (355 ml) serving.
Similar Drinks
For many years, Diet Pepsi also advertised that it had only one calorie per serving. This was true from when it first came out in 1964 until 1991.
Pepsi One in Racing
On April 7, 2010, Pepsi One became a sponsor for a racing series. It sponsored the Super Late Models division at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale. This racing series was then called the NASCAR Pepsi One Super Late Models.
