A Look Back: Park History

This park is named after an old steamship dock called a wharf. A wharf is like a pier where boats can load and unload goods. Sam Percival built this wharf way back in 1860. It was a busy spot for many years, even being rebuilt a few times.

The park you see today was built in different stages. The first part opened in 1977. More sections were added in 1985 and 1988, making it bigger and better. In 1996, the city bought some land that used to be a fuel storage area. Now, it's a nice open grassy space for everyone to enjoy.

What You Can Do at the Park

Percival Landing Park has lots of cool things to do! You can have a picnic with your family or friends. There's also a playground where you can run and play. If you have a boat, there are places to dock it.

One of the best parts is the long boardwalk. It's almost a mile long and stretches along the water. You can walk, jog, or just enjoy the views of Budd Inlet.

You'll also find some amazing public art here. Look for the carved Orca statue! It was made by a local artist named Joe Tougas. He even made an identical Orca for Olympia's sister city, Yashiro, Japan.

Fun Events at the Park

Percival Landing Park is a popular spot for many yearly events. These include Harbor Days, where you can see all sorts of boats. There's also "Sand in the City," which features incredible sand sculptures. Another cool event is the Wooden Boat Festival, celebrating beautiful boats made of wood.
