Early Life and Education
Percy Poe Bishop was born in Powell, Tennessee, on May 27, 1877. He was a bright student and went on to attend the University of Tennessee. In 1898, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the university.
After graduating, Bishop joined the military. On July 9, 1898, he was officially made a second lieutenant in the 4th Field Artillery Regiment. This marked the beginning of his long career in the United States Army.
Military Career and Promotions
Percy Bishop quickly showed his skills in the Army. In 1902, he was an honor graduate from the Artillery School. He then became an instructor at the school until 1903, helping to train other soldiers.
From 1907 to 1911, and again from 1914 to 1917, Bishop served as an assistant to the Chief of Coast Artillery. This role involved helping to manage the defenses along the coast.
As World War I began, Bishop's career advanced rapidly. In October 1917, he joined the General Staff Corps. He became an assistant to the secretary of the General Staff. He was promoted to colonel in February 1918 and then became the secretary of the General Staff in March 1918.
Bishop was promoted to brigadier general in October 1918. He held this important rank until November 1919. After the war, he returned to his peacetime rank. From 1918 to 1921, he was in charge of the Personnel Branch of the General Staff. In 1926, he completed his studies at the Army War College. He became a brigadier general again in 1934 and a major general in 1938. General Bishop retired from the Army in 1941.
Awards and Recognition
General Percy Poe Bishop was recognized for his excellent service. He received the Distinguished Service Medal. This award was given to him for his outstanding work as the secretary of the General Staff during a critical time.
Later Life and Legacy
After a long and successful career serving his country, Percy Poe Bishop passed away on April 8, 1967. He was eighty-nine years old. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
