Perdiccas I was an ancient Greek king. He ruled the kingdom of Macedon. Historians believe he ruled around 653 BC. He is known for being the first king of the Argead royal family.
The First King of Macedon
There are two main stories about how the Argead royal family started. The older stories say that Perdiccas was the very first king of Macedon. These stories come from ancient historians like Herodotus and Thucydides. They wrote in the 400s BC.
Different Stories About the Founder
Later, around the 300s BC, a new story appeared. This story said that a king named Caranus was the first founder. It claimed he was the one who started the kingdom, not Perdiccas. Some writers even said Caranus was Perdiccas's father.
- Many modern historians think this later story was not true.
- They believe it was made up by the royal family at the time.
- This might have been done to make Caranus seem more important.
What Herodotus Said
The historian Herodotus wrote about Perdiccas and his brothers. He said they came from a place called Argos. They traveled through the land of the Illyrians and reached Macedonia. They settled in a city called Lebaea.
Herodotus also made it clear that Perdiccas's family, the Argeads, were indeed Greeks. He said he would prove this later in his writings. This was important because it showed the Macedonian kings were part of the wider Greek world.
