Who Was Perdiccas I?
Perdiccas I was a very early king of Macedon. Historians like Nicholas Hammond have estimated that he ruled around 653 BC. This was a time when ancient Greece was just starting to form its powerful city-states and kingdoms.
Stories About the Argead Dynasty
There are different stories about how the Argead dynasty, Perdiccas's family, began.
The Older Story
The earliest stories, written by famous ancient Greek historians Herodotus and Thucydides, say that Perdiccas was the very first king of Macedon. Herodotus wrote that three brothers, Gauanes, Aeropus, and Perdiccas, came from Argos (a city in Greece). They traveled through the land of the Illyrians and eventually settled in the upper parts of Macedon, near a city called Lebaea.
Herodotus also said that these descendants of Perdiccas were indeed Greeks. This was important because it showed their connection to the wider Greek world.
The Newer Story
Later stories, which appeared around the 300s BC, claimed that someone named Caranus was the founder of the dynasty, not Perdiccas. Some writers even said Caranus was Perdiccas's father. However, many modern historians believe this newer story was created later. It might have been used by kings at the time to make their family line seem even older or more important.
Perdiccas's Family
Perdiccas I was succeeded by his son, Argaeus I. This continued the line of the Argead dynasty, which would later include famous kings like Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great.
