Perico is a town and a municipality in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. It is located in the western part of Cuba. Perico is found south of Marti, north of Colón, and east of Jovellanos. It is a place with a rich history and a lively community.

Exploring Perico's Geography
Perico is divided into smaller areas called barrios. These are like neighborhoods or districts within the municipality. The main barrios are Altamisal, Norte, Quintana, Roque, Sur, and Tinguaro.
Villages and Hamlets
The municipality also includes smaller villages and hamlets, known as consejos populares. Two of these are España Republicana and Máximo Gómez. España Republicana means "Republican Spain." Máximo Gómez is named after a very important military leader from the Cuban War of Independence.

Perico was first established in 1874. It started near a military base of the Spanish Colonial Civil Guard. This was a group that helped keep order during the time Cuba was a Spanish colony.
Changes in Name
For a short time, in 1885, the town's name was changed to Miguel de Cervantes. However, in 1899, the original name, Perico, was brought back.
