Perrine's Bridge is a very old covered bridge in New York State. It is the second oldest one in the state! You can find it near the Wallkill River in Ulster County, New York.
This special bridge is located close to Interstate 87 in the town of Esopus-Rosendale, New York. It was built a long time ago to help people move goods between the towns of Rifton and Rosendale.
History of Perrine's Bridge
The State of New York helped pay for the bridge in May 1834. Ulster County also invested money to build it. The bridge was finished in 1835 by a builder named Benjamin Wood.
The bridge is named after James W. Perrine. He owned an inn, which is like an old hotel, near where the bridge was built. His son had a special job in the winter. He would spread snow along the bridge. This made it easier for horse-drawn sleighs to cross!
A Historic Landmark
Perrine's Bridge is a very important historical site. In 1966, it was named a New York Historical site. Later, on April 13, 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history.
The bridge has been fixed up many times over the years to keep it safe. The last time it was restored was in 1997. Today, cars cannot drive on the bridge. Only people walking can use this historic wooden bridge.
