Perrysburg is a small community in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet and a census-designated place. This means it's a small settlement that isn't officially a town or city, but its population is counted by the government. Perrysburg used to be an official village.

The community is named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a famous naval hero. In 2010, about 401 people lived here. Perrysburg is located in the south-central part of the larger town of Perrysburg, and it's west of a place called Gowanda.

History of Perrysburg

A settlement has been in the Perrysburg area since the early 1800s. Some of the first people to settle here were soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. They used their military pensions to buy farmland.

The village of Perrysburg officially became a village in 1916. In the past, both the village and the town were sometimes spelled "Perrysburgh" with an "h" at the end. By 1880, about 400 people lived in the village. It was also a stop on the New York & Erie Railroad, which was important for travel and trade.

The J. N. Adam Memorial Hospital

In 1910, the city of Buffalo bought land near Perrysburg. They wanted to build a hospital for people suffering from tuberculosis, a serious lung illness. This hospital, called the Buffalo Municipal Hospital for Incipient Tuberculosis, opened in 1912. It later became known as the J. N. Adam Memorial Hospital.

The hospital brought many new people to Perrysburg. Doctors, nurses, and other hospital workers moved there. People also came to visit patients. This caused the local population to grow a lot.

There's a local story that a beautiful stained glass dome from Buffalo's Pan-American Exposition was moved to the hospital. However, pictures show that the dome at the hospital looked different from the one at the exposition.

Village Dissolution

On March 16, 2010, the people of Perrysburg voted to dissolve their village. This means they decided to stop being an official village and become part of the larger town of Perrysburg. The vote was 60 to 9 in favor of dissolving. The change officially happened at the end of 2011. Perrysburg was one of several villages in Cattaraugus County that chose to dissolve around that time.
