History of Perryville
The first building for the Perry County government, called a courthouse, was built in Perryville in 1841. This was just one year after Perry County was created. The town itself was planned out before 1850.
In 1844, John and Harriet Rison moved to Perryville. They started the first church in the community, which was a Methodist church. Their log home became a place where people gathered. It is now the oldest building in Perryville. In 1849, John Rison bought more land to build a log store and a schoolhouse.
The first log courthouse burned down. Historians are not sure exactly when this happened, but it was either in 1848 or 1850. Another log courthouse was then built in its place.
Later, in 1872, a new courthouse made of wood was built. It was located about half a mile from the older log courthouse. This wooden building also burned down in May 1874, but it was rebuilt. It burned down again in December 1881 and was rebuilt once more. The current courthouse in Perryville was built in 1888. It cost $4,000 to build.
