Pervis Ellison (born April 3, 1967) is a former American professional basketball player. He was known for his amazing skills with the University of Louisville team. People even called him "Never Nervous Pervis" because he played so well under pressure. After leading Louisville to a national championship, he was the very first player chosen in the 1989 NBA Draft.
College Basketball Star
Pervis Ellison was a tall player, standing 6 feet 9 inches. He played as the center for the Louisville Cardinals for all four years of college. His coach was Denny Crum.
In his first year, Pervis helped Louisville win their second national championship in 1986. He scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the championship game against Duke. Louisville won 72-69. Pervis was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. He was only the second freshman ever to receive this special award.
Playing in the NBA
The Sacramento Kings picked Pervis Ellison as the first player in the 1989 NBA draft. However, his professional career was often affected by injuries. His teammate, Danny Ainge, even gave him the nickname "Out of Service Pervis" because he missed so many games.
During his first year, Pervis missed 48 out of 82 games due to an injury. After that, he was traded to the Washington Bullets. On April 6, 1991, Pervis had one of his best games. He scored 30 points and had 12 rebounds in a win against the Indiana Pacers.
In the next season, 1991-1992, Pervis became a full-time starter. He played so well that he won the NBA Most Improved Player Award. He averaged 20.0 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.68 blocks per game that year. On January 31, 1992, he had another fantastic game against the Knicks. He recorded 19 points, 19 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 blocked shots, and 2 steals.
Challenges with Injuries
Pervis continued to face many injuries throughout his career. He had knee problems that kept him out of many games in the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons.
In April 1994, he joined the Boston Celtics. However, he couldn't play right away because he was still recovering from his knee issues. Later, he even broke a toe while moving furniture. This injury kept him out of most games between 1996 and 1998.
He played only a few games in his last three seasons with the Celtics. In 2000, he joined the Seattle SuperSonics. But after playing just nine games, he decided to retire from basketball.
After his playing career, Pervis Ellison coached basketball for Life Center Academy in Burlington, New Jersey. He lives in Voorhees Township, New Jersey. His son, Malik Ellison, also played basketball for him and is now a professional player.
