Discovering Pesse
Pesse is an old type of village called an esdorp. These villages grew around a central green area. Pesse started developing a long time ago, during the Middle Ages. The first time anyone wrote about Pesse was in the year 1217. At that time, it was called Petthe. We are not exactly sure what the name "Pesse" means.
The Pesse Canoe
Pesse is most famous for an amazing discovery: the Pesse canoe. Many people believe this is the oldest known boat in the entire world! Scientists used a method called Carbon dating to figure out its age. They found that the canoe was built between 8040 BCE and 7510 BCE. This was during a very early time in history called the Mesolithic period.
Today, you can see the Pesse canoe at the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands. The canoe was found by accident when workers were building the A28 motorway nearby. It's a fantastic example of how people lived and traveled thousands of years ago!
