Petar Gligorovski's Creative Journey

Learning and Starting Out

Petar Gligorovski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Belgrade in Belgrade. He then specialized in animation in Zagreb. From 1963 to 1968, he began making animated films for TV Skopje. He created "Embrion № M," which was the very first animated film from Macedonia.

A Leader in Animation

Petar Gligorovski became a leading figure in modern Macedonian animation. His work won awards at important film festivals in cities like Berlin, Oberhausen, and New York. Before he started making films, he was also one of the first people to create comics in Yugoslavia during the 1950s. He worked as a technical animator, often with the well-known animators from Zagreb.

His Unique Film Style

Gligorovski made several movies and worked on two projects that were never finished for the "Vardar Film" company. His films had a very special and easy-to-recognize style. He used many colors, mostly shapes that looked like living things, and repeated patterns.

His films often explored big, universal themes. These included ideas about birth, the fall of humanity, the end of the world, and the phoenix (a mythical bird that rises from ashes). He showed these ideas using many visual symbols and hidden meanings. Sometimes, he even put parts of documentaries into his animated films. He did this to add more meaning to the story, not just to make the film look pretty or to test new techniques.

Lost Works

After Petar Gligorovski passed away in 1995, sadly, much of his work was lost. Today, only two of his animated short films are easy to find and watch online.
