Peter Dubovský (born May 7, 1972 – died June 23, 2000) was a talented Slovak footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was mainly responsible for scoring goals.
Peter started his football journey with Slovan Bratislava. He then spent seven years playing in Spain. There, he played 151 games and scored 19 goals in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. He played for two different teams during his time in Spain.
Sadly, Peter Dubovský passed away in 2000 when he was only 28 years old. This happened while he was on vacation in Thailand.
Club Career
Peter Dubovský was born in Bratislava, which was then part of Czechoslovakia. He began his professional football career with his local club, ŠK Slovan Bratislava. He joined the club when he was just 13 years old.
Only four years later, he played his first game in the Czechoslovak First League. This was the highest league in Czechoslovakia. In his last two seasons with Slovan Bratislava, he scored an amazing 51 goals in only 59 games. He was the top scorer in the league during both of these seasons. His excellent playing helped his hometown club win the national championship in 1992.
In 1993, Peter was named the Slovak Footballer of the Year. After this, he moved to Spain to play for one of the biggest clubs, Real Madrid. He played in 26 games during his first season (1993–94). However, in his second season, a new manager, Jorge Valdano, didn't play him much. Also, a young and talented player named Raúl started playing well, which meant fewer chances for Peter.
Peter stayed in Spain's top league for the next five years. He played for Real Oviedo. In the 1995–96 season, he scored seven goals in 31 matches. This was his best scoring record in Spain. He helped his team, from the Asturias region, finish 14th in the league.
International Career
Peter Dubovský first played for the Czechoslovakia national team on November 13, 1991. He was 19 years old at the time. His first game was against Spain in a qualifying match for the UEFA Euro 1992 tournament. Czechoslovakia lost that game 2–1. Over the next two years, he played 13 more international games and scored six goals for Czechoslovakia.
After Slovakia became an independent country, Peter started playing for the Slovak national team. He became the country's top goalscorer with 12 goals. Later, Szilárd Németh broke his record. Peter remained among Slovakia's top 10 goalscorers until March 2024. At that time, Ondrej Duda scored his 13th goal, moving Peter to a shared 11th place.
