Ondrej Duda (born on December 5, 1994) is a professional footballer from Slovakia. He plays as a midfielder for the Italian club Hellas Verona. He also plays for the Slovakia national team.
Ondrej Duda: A Football Star
Ondrej Duda is known for his skills on the football field. He has played for several important clubs in Europe. He also represents his home country, Slovakia, in international matches.
Early Career and Rise to Fame
Ondrej Duda started his football journey in his hometown club, MFK Snina. He then moved to Košice. There, he quickly moved up through the youth teams. He made his first team debut at just 17 years old. This was during a 1–0 win against Slovan Bratislava.
In early 2014, Duda decided to join Legia Warsaw. This was a big step in his career. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the club.
In July 2015, something unusual happened during a game. Duda was hit by a stone during a UEFA Europa League match in Albania. The game had to be stopped. Legia Warsaw was given a 3–0 win for the incident.
Playing for Hertha BSC
On July 20, 2016, Duda joined Bundesliga team Hertha Berlin. He signed a five-year deal. Soon after, he had a knee injury and needed surgery.
He finally played his first game for Hertha on February 25, 2017. This was seven months after he joined the club. He came on as a substitute in a 2–0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Duda became famous for scoring a goal against Bayern Munich. He shot the ball into the net past the goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer. This goal helped Hertha Berlin win 2–0 against the German champions.
The 2018–2019 season was very good for Duda at Hertha. He played in 32 out of 34 Bundesliga games. He scored 11 goals and helped with 6 assists. Even though Hertha did not qualify for European competitions, Duda's great performance caught the eye of other clubs like Sevilla. His manager, Pal Dardai, praised him a lot. He said Duda could do things with the ball that very few others could.
The 2019–2020 season was not as good for Duda. Hertha got a new manager, Ante Čović. Duda started in the first five games. But then he played much less. Later, Jürgen Klinsmann, a famous former player and manager, took over. Klinsmann did not include Duda in his plans. Duda then looked for a new club. Before leaving, he played in seven Bundesliga games and two cup games. He scored one goal in a cup match.
Loan to Norwich City
On January 12, 2020, Duda was loaned to Norwich City for the rest of the 2019–20 season. He said he wanted to enjoy playing football again. He was happy to move to a new league.
He made his first start for Norwich on January 18, 2020. This was in a home game against Bournemouth. Duda had a shot that was going into the goal. But a Bournemouth player, Steve Cook, stopped it with his hand. Cook was sent off, and Norwich got a penalty. Teemu Pukki scored the penalty, and Norwich won 1–0. Duda was happy about the win. People said his debut was "impressive."
Even though Duda did not score any goals for Norwich, his manager, Daniel Farke, praised him. Farke said Duda was very professional. Norwich was relegated, so Duda returned to Hertha early. This showed the respect between them.
Moving to 1. FC Köln and Hellas Verona
In September 2020, Duda signed a four-year contract with Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln. This move happened shortly after Hertha bought a player from Köln.
On January 29, 2023, Duda joined Serie A team Hellas Verona. He went there on loan until the end of the season. Hellas Verona avoided relegation, which means they stayed in the top league. After that, Duda joined the club permanently. The transfer fee was about €2 million.
Playing for Slovakia
Ondrej Duda first played for the Slovakia national team on November 18, 2014. He came on as a substitute in a friendly match against Finland. Slovakia won the game 2–1.
Duda scored Slovakia's first goal in their UEFA Euro 2016 campaign. He scored to make the score 1–1 against Wales. However, Slovakia lost that game 2–1. His first goal in a qualifying competition was in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification game against Malta. Slovakia won 3–0, which helped them finish second in their group.
Duda has been a regular player for the national team. He has played under different coaches. In March 2023, some experts discussed his role. They wondered if he could take over from Marek Hamšík in creating plays for the team.
