What's in a Name? The Meaning of Žilina
The name Žilina comes from the Slavic/Slovak word žila. This word means a "(river) vein." So, Žilina means "a place with many watercourses" or "a place with many rivers."
Another idea is that the name comes from the Žilinka river. It could also be from the name of the people who lived there, called Žilín or Žiliňane.
A Look Back: The History of Žilina
People lived in the area of Žilina as early as the late Stone Age, around 20,000 BC. Around the 5th century, Slavs started to settle here.
The first time Žilina was written about was in 1208. It was called terra de Selinan then. From the late 900s until 1918, Žilina was part of the Kingdom of Hungary.
Around 1300, the city began to grow. By 1312, it was already known as a town. In 1321, King Charles I made Žilina a "free royal town." This meant it had special rights and could govern itself more.
In 1381, King Louis I issued a special rule called Privilegium pro Slavis. This rule made sure that Slavic people living in the town had equal rights with the Germans. Half of the city council seats were given to Slavs. In 1431, the town was burned by the Hussites.
During the 1600s, Žilina became a center for making things, trading, and learning. Many monasteries and churches were built. The Budatín Castle was also built during this time.
In the mid-1800s, Žilina grew a lot. New railway lines were built, connecting it to other big cities. Factories also started to appear, like a cloth factory in 1891 and a chemical factory in 1892.
Žilina was one of the first towns to sign the Martin Declaration in 1918. This declaration helped create the country of Czechoslovakia. Until March 1919, Žilina was even the seat of the Slovak government. In 1938, Slovakia declared its independence within Czechoslovakia in Žilina.
During the Holocaust in Slovakia, many Jewish people were sadly deported from Žilina. On April 30, 1945, Žilina was captured by Czechoslovak and Soviet troops. After this, it became part of Czechoslovakia again.
After World War II, the city kept growing. Many new factories, schools, and homes were built. Žilina has been the main city of the Žilina Region since 1996.
Today, Žilina is the fourth largest city in Slovakia. It is also a major industrial center and home to the University of Žilina. Since 1990, the old part of the city has been restored. The city also built trolleybus lines for public transport.
Exploring Žilina's Location and Environment

Mountains surround Žilina, including the Malá Fatra, Súľovské vrchy, Javorníky, and Kysucká vrchovina. There are also protected natural areas nearby, like the Strážov Mountains Protected Landscape Area. Two hydroelectric dams are on the Váh river near Žilina.
