Peter Fill, born on November 12, 1982, is a famous former alpine ski racer from northern Italy. He grew up in Brixen, South Tyrol. Peter used to compete in all types of ski races, but later focused on fast events like downhill, super-G, and combined races. He won the World Cup title for downhill skiing twice, in 2016 and 2017. He also won the combined title in 2018. Peter retired from racing on February 1, 2020.

Peter Fill's Skiing Journey

Peter Fill is known as a very versatile skier. In the 2007 season, he was one of the top skiers aiming for the overall World Cup title. He was the first Italian since Alberto Tomba to be in the top ten overall.

Early Life and Training

Peter started skiing at age three. His first teacher was Frieda Senoner. He achieved his first successes in middle school, coached by Peter Thomaseth. In 1997, he joined the Seiser Alm training center. There, his uncle Arnold coached him.

He also joined the Bolzano-Bozen ski team's B-Pool. A year later, he moved to the A-Pool. In 1999, Peter won every event at the National Junior Championships. He earned four gold medals and was called "the phenomenon" by the Italian press.

Joining the National Team

In 2000, Peter joined the Italian national ski team. Ernst Pfeifhofer was his coach. He also became a member of the Carabinieri sports group. As a junior in 2001, he won a bronze medal in super-G at the World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships. This was his first big international success.

In February 2002, Peter won the World Juniors. This allowed him to compete in his first World Cup race. On March 7, 2002, he raced in a super-G event in Austria. He finished 12th, beating the famous Norwegian skier Lasse Kjus. While Peter is strongest in downhill and super-G, he also competes well in other events. In January 2006, he earned his first World Cup podium. He placed third in a super combined race in Wengen, Switzerland.

World Cup Successes

During the 2006 and 2007 World Cup seasons, Peter had seven podium finishes. These included four in downhill, two in super-G, and one in combined. However, he didn't win any races yet. On March 21, 2007, he became the Italian Champion in multiple events. He won twice in super-G and once in giant slalom. This brought his total national championships to three.

In the 2008 season, he didn't reach the podium. But he still finished in the top ten six times. On November 29, 2008, Peter won his first World Cup race. It was a downhill event in Lake Louise, Canada. He was the seventh Italian to win a World Cup downhill race.

World Championship Medals

On February 4, 2009, Peter won a silver medal. This was in the super-G at the World Championships in Val-d'Isère, France. He finished ahead of three-time World Champion Aksel Lund Svindal. Only the Swiss skier Didier Cuche was faster. This silver medal was the only one won by the Italian men's team at those championships.

Peter won his second World Cup race in 2016. It was the downhill event at Kitzbühel, Austria. This race was tough due to dark and windy conditions. It also ended the season for overall leader Aksel Lund Svindal. Peter then made history by becoming the first Italian to win the World Cup downhill title. He finished 10th in the final downhill race of the season in St. Moritz. This put him 26 points ahead of Svindal.

Peter Fill's Life Outside Skiing

Peter Fill is a cousin of Denise Karbon, who was also a giant slalom racer. After junior high school, Peter started working as an auto body mechanic. He also attended a vocational school. However, he left school to focus more on alpine skiing.

Languages and Inspirations

Peter's first language is German. He also speaks Italian and English very well. His idol in everyday life is his uncle, Norbert Rier. Norbert is the leader of the Kastelruther Spatzen. This is a famous folk music group, especially in German-speaking countries. Norbert even dedicated a song to Peter called "Wiedermal a super Zeit." This was for Peter's silver medal in super-G at the 2009 World Championships.

Team and Sponsors

Since 2007, Peter's manager has been Andreas Goller. Andreas also managed Kristian Ghedina before. Peter's ski technician is Sepp Kuppelwieser from South Tyrol. Sepp worked with Kjetil André Aamodt for ten years.

During the 2009 season, Peter's sponsors rewarded him. Atomic, Briko, Finstral, and Leki offered him a special prize. If he won the downhill at the World Cup finals in Sweden, he could win an Artega GT sports car.
