Peter Fill (born November 12, 1982) is a famous former alpine ski racer from northern Italy. He was born in Brixen, South Tyrol. Peter used to compete in all types of ski races. Later, he focused on fast events like downhill, Super-G, and combined (a mix of races). He won the World Cup season title for downhill skiing twice, in 2016 and 2017. He also won the combined title in 2018.

Skiing Journey

Peter Fill was a very skilled skier who could compete well in many different types of races. In the 2007 season, he was one of the top skiers aiming for the overall World Cup title. He was the first Italian skier since Alberto Tomba to be in the top ten overall.

Peter learned to ski when he was just three years old. His first teacher was Frieda Senoner. He started to achieve success during his middle school years, coached by Peter Thomaseth. In 1997-1998, he trained at the Seiser Alm center with his uncle Arnold as his coach.

He quickly moved up in the ski world. In 1999, he won every event at the National Junior Championships, earning four gold medals. The Italian newspapers called him "the phenomenon" because of his amazing talent.

In 2000, Peter joined the national team for the first time. He also became a member of the Carabinieri sports group. In 2001, as a junior, he won a bronze medal in the super-G at the Junior World Championships. This was his first big international success.

In February 2002, Peter won the World Juniors. This led to his first World Cup race on March 7, 2002, in Austria. He finished 12th in the super-G, even beating the famous Norwegian skier Lasse Kjus by a tiny bit. While Peter was strongest in downhill and super-G, he was also good at other technical races. On January 13, 2006, he earned his first World Cup podium, finishing 3rd in a super combined race in Switzerland.

Between 2006 and 2007, Peter had seven podium finishes in World Cup races. He placed in the top three four times in downhill, twice in super-G, and once in combined. However, he didn't win any of these races. On March 21, 2007, he became the Italian Champion in multiple events, bringing his total national championships to three.

In 2008, he didn't reach the podium but still finished in the top ten six times. On November 29, 2008, Peter won his first World Cup race in Canada. He won the downhill event, becoming only the seventh Italian skier to win a World Cup downhill race.

On February 4, 2009, he won a silver medal in super-G at the World Championships in France. He raced on a very difficult, icy slope. He finished ahead of three-time World Champion Aksel Lund Svindal, but couldn't beat the Swiss skier Didier Cuche. This silver medal was the only one won by the Italian men's team at those championships.

Peter won his second World Cup race in 2016. It was a downhill race in Kitzbühel, Austria, on a tough, windy day. This race unfortunately ended the season for overall leader Aksel Lund Svindal. Peter went on to become the first Italian to win the World Cup downhill title. He finished 10th in the final downhill race of the season in March 2016, ending 26 points ahead of Svindal.

Personal Life

Peter Fill is a cousin of Denise Karbon, who was also a famous giant slalom skier. After middle school, Peter started working as an auto body mechanic and went to a vocational school. However, he left school to focus more on his alpine skiing career.

His first language is German, but he also speaks Italian and English very well. Peter looks up to his uncle Norbert Rier, who is the leader of a popular folk music group called Kastelruther Spatzen. His uncle's group even dedicated a song to Peter for his silver medal in super-G at the 2009 World Championships.

From 2007, Peter's manager was Andreas Goller. His ski technician, who helps prepare his skis, was Sepp Kuppelwieser.

During the 2009 season, some of Peter's sponsors offered him a special prize. If he won the downhill race at the World Cup finals in Sweden, he would win an Artega GT sports car!
