Peter Hamm (born February 27, 1937 – died July 22, 2019) was a German writer. He was known as a poet, author, journalist, and literary critic. A literary critic is someone who reviews and analyzes books and other writings.

Peter Hamm wrote many documentaries for television. Some of these were about famous writers like Ingeborg Bachmann and Peter Handke. He also wrote for important German newspapers such as Der Spiegel and Die Zeit. For many years, from 1964 to 2002, Hamm worked for the radio and TV station Bayerischer Rundfunk. He was in charge of cultural programs there. He also helped judge literary prizes and was a critic for a book club on Swiss television.

Early Life and School

Peter Hamm was born in Munich, Germany, in 1937. His mother passed away when he was very young, in 1940. He then grew up with his grandparents in Weingarten and also attended several Catholic boarding schools.

He decided to leave school when he was 14 years old. After leaving school, he worked on a farm for a while. He also started training to become a bookseller, but he did not finish this training.

Peter Hamm's first poems were published in a literary magazine called Akzente in 1954. He was only 17 years old at the time. In 1956, he was invited to read his work at a famous German literary group called Gruppe 47.

From 1959, he traveled to East Germany several times. There, he met other writers like Peter Huchel and Sarah Kirsch. He also met the poet Paul Celan in Paris. From 1964 to 2002, Peter Hamm was a cultural editor for Bayerischer Rundfunk. He created many television documentaries. These films featured well-known figures such as Ingeborg Bachmann, Heinrich Böll, Peter Handke, and Martin Walser.

Hamm was a member of several important German academies for language and arts. He was also a judge for literary awards, including the Petrarca-Preis. From 1990 to 2014, he was part of the critics' team for the Literaturclub on Swiss television. In 1976, he won the Grimme-Preis, a major German television award, for his film Die verbotene Schönheit, which was about the composer Hans Werner Henze.
