Peter Wardell Hogg CC QC FRSC (March 12, 1939 – February 4, 2020) was a very important legal expert and lawyer from Canada. He was born in New Zealand. He was known as a top expert on Canadian constitutional law. This is the set of rules that govern how Canada is run. Many judges in Canada's highest court often looked at his writings.

Growing Up and Learning

Peter Hogg was born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, on March 12, 1939. He went to Nelson College for high school. He then studied law at Victoria University of Wellington. He earned his first law degree there in 1962. He continued his studies and got more advanced law degrees. He earned one from Harvard University in 1963. Later, he received his PhD from Monash University in Australia in 1970.

His Work and Achievements

In 1970, Peter Hogg became a Professor of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. This is a famous law school. In 1998, he became the Dean of the school. This is like being the head of the school. After leaving the university in 2003, he worked as a special expert. He joined a law firm called Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP.

Peter Hogg wrote many important books about law. His book Constitutional Law of Canada was very famous. It was the most quoted book by the Supreme Court of Canada. This means judges often used his ideas in their decisions. In 2004, he even helped the Canadian government. He was the main lawyer for them in a big case. This case was about same-sex marriage in the Supreme Court. He believed that judges should be careful. They should not make too many new laws themselves. Instead, they should follow the existing laws.

Peter Hogg passed away on February 4, 2020.

Awards and Recognition
