Peter Jöback is a famous Swedish singer, actor, and musical artist. He was born on June 4, 1971. Peter is well-known for his amazing voice and his many roles in popular musicals. He has performed in big shows both in London's West End and on Broadway in New York City.
Peter Jöback's Life Story
Early Years and School
Peter Jöback grew up in Sweden. He was born in Stockholm in 1971. As a student, he went to the Adolf Fredrik's Music School in Stockholm. This school is famous for its music education.
Becoming a Star (1995–2000)
Peter's big break came when he worked with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from ABBA. They created the musical Kristina från Duvemåla. Peter played the role of Robert. His song "Guldet blev till sand" became a huge hit in Sweden. The musical was very popular. It was seen by over a million people. Peter even won his first Golden Mask award for his role.
In 1997, Peter released his album Personliga Val. It reached number 2 on the Swedish music charts. This album had 11 pop versions of songs from famous musicals.
A famous producer, Cameron Mackintosh, noticed Peter's talent. He offered Peter the main role of Chris in Miss Saigon. This show was in London's West End. Later, in 2000, Peter also starred in another of Mackintosh's shows. He played Michael in The Witches of Eastwick.
Music and Collaborations (2000–2005)
In 2000, Peter released his first English album, Only When I Breathe. It quickly became number 1 in Sweden. Many of Peter's shows and albums have been praised by critics.
In 2002, Peter released a Christmas album. He sang a duet with Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø. The song was called "Gå Inte Förbi." They have often performed together since then.
In 2004, Peter worked with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. They created a project called Storybook. Peter sang classic songs with new music. Their CD became a Gold Disc. They also performed two big concerts in Sweden. This project helped Peter become popular in Norway too.
More Success and New Music (2006–2010)
From 2006 to 2007, Peter played the Emcee in the musical Cabaret. He performed in Stockholm and Gothenburg. He received great reviews and won another Golden Mask award.
In 2008, Peter had a very successful Christmas tour. He released a new Christmas album that sold millions. In 2009, Peter moved to New York City. He wanted to find new ideas for his music. This led to his album East Side Stories. It featured famous guest artists like Kate Pierson from The B-52's.
Peter also took part in Melodifestivalen 2010. This is the Swedish competition to choose a song for the Eurovision Song Contest. His song "Hollow" made it to the final.
Big Musical Roles (2011–Present)
In 2011, Peter performed in the grand finale of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall. The next year, in 2012, he took on the main role of The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in London. He then played the Phantom on Broadway in New York City in 2013. He also brought the Phantom to Sweden in 2016. In January 2018, Peter returned to Broadway for the 30th Anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera.
From December 2013 to April 2014, he played the main character in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. This musical was performed at Stockholms Stadsteater.
More recently, in early 2024, Peter played Jean Valjean in Les Misérables in London. He will play this role again in Sweden in 2025 as part of a world tour.
In 2025, Peter Jöback came in second place on the fifth season of Masked Singer Sverige. This is a popular TV show where celebrities sing in costumes.
Peter's Personal Life
Peter Jöback's mother is the singer Monica Lind. On June 25, 2010, Peter married his partner, Oskar Nilsson. Their wedding took place at the Cirkus Theatre in Stockholm.
