Peter Arne Jöback (born 4 June 1971) is a famous Swedish singer, actor, and musical artist. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden.

Peter Jöback is well-known for his roles in many popular musicals. He has starred in West End shows like Miss Saigon and The Witches of Eastwick. He is also famous for playing the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in both London and on Broadway. More recently, he played Jean Valjean in Les Misérables in London. He will play this role again for a special world tour.

Peter Jöback's Life Story

Early Life and School

Peter Jöback was born on June 4, 1971, in Stockholm. He spent his childhood years in different parts of Sweden, including Värmland and Östergötland.

When he was a student, Peter went to the Adolf Fredrik's Music School in Stockholm. This school is known for its focus on music education.

Starting His Career: 1995–2000

Peter Jöback became famous after working with ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. He starred in their musical Kristina från Duvemåla (also known as The Emigrants). This show was performed at the Malmö Opera and Music Theatre.

Peter played the character of Robert. His song from the musical, "Guldet blev till sand," became a huge hit in Sweden. Over a million people in Sweden saw the musical. The album from the show sold very well and won several Swedish Grammy awards. Peter also won his first Golden Mask award for his role as Robert.

In 1997, Peter released his album Personliga Val. It reached number two on the Swedish music charts. The album had 11 pop versions of songs from famous musicals.

A famous theatre producer, Cameron Mackintosh, noticed Peter's talent. He offered Peter the main role of Chris in Miss Saigon in London's West End in 1997. In 2000, Peter also played Michael in Mackintosh's new show, The Witches of Eastwick, in London.

English Albums and Collaborations: 2000–2005

In September 2000, Peter Jöback released Only When I Breathe. This was his first studio album sung in English. It quickly became number one on the Swedish album charts.

Many of Peter's shows and albums have been praised by critics. On his Christmas album in 2002, he sang a duet with Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø. They sang a Swedish version of the Irish folk song "Be Thou My Vision," called "Gå Inte Förbi." Peter and Sissel often sing together at concerts.

In 2004, Peter worked with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. They created a project called Storybook. Peter sang classic songs with new music arrangements. They released a CD together, which became a Gold Disc. They also performed two big concerts in Sweden. This album helped Peter become a star in Norway. His first solo tour there in 2005 was very successful.

New Roles and Inspiration: 2006–2010

From 2006 to 2007, Peter Jöback played the Emcee in Cabaret in Stockholm and Gothenburg. He received great reviews and won his second Golden Mask Tony Award for this role. He had played the Emcee before in Copenhagen in 2003.

At the end of 2008, Peter had a very popular Christmas tour in Scandinavia. This followed the release of his new Christmas album, which sold four times platinum. In 2007, he also toured Scandinavia with his album of original songs, which he helped write.

In January 2009, Peter moved to New York City. He wanted to find new ideas and meet new people. This led to his album East Side Stories, which was recorded in Woodstock. Famous artists like Kate Pierson from The B-52's and Sia were featured on the album.

Peter Jöback also took part in Melodifestivalen 2010. This is the Swedish competition to choose a song for the Eurovision Song Contest. His song, "Hollow," made it to the final and finished in ninth place.

Musical Theatre Success Continues: 2011–Present

In 2011, Peter Jöback performed in the big finale of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall. In 2012, he took on the famous role of The Phantom in the West End production of The Phantom of the Opera. He then played the Phantom on Broadway in April 2013.

Peter left the Broadway show in August 2013. However, he brought the Phantom to Sweden, where the show opened in Stockholm in September 2016. In January 2018, Peter returned to Broadway to play the Phantom again for the show's 30th Anniversary.

From December 2013 to April 2014, he played the main role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Stockholms Stadsteater.

On January 26, 2024, it was announced that Peter would play Jean Valjean in Les Misérables in London. He performed this role from February 13 to March 9. In January and February 2025, he will play the same role in Sweden as part of a world tour.

Peter Jöback's Personal Life

Peter Jöback's mother is the singer Monica Lind.

On June 25, 2010, Peter married his partner, Oskar Nilsson. Their wedding took place at the Cirkus Theatre in Stockholm.
