Serving His Community
Jones first served on the city council in Shaker Heights. In 1994, he ran for governor with Rob Burch. From 1997 to 2002, he was a state representative for Ohio.
In February 2002, he became a county commissioner for Cuyahoga County. He took over from Jane Campbell when she became the mayor of Cleveland.
Important Decisions
In 2007, Jones voted differently from others on two big issues. He did not agree with raising the sales tax in Cuyahoga County. This tax was meant to help pay for a new convention center. He also disagreed with tearing down the Ameritrust Tower. The county had bought this building to use as a new office, but then decided to sell it.
In 2009, people thought Jones might run for a U.S. Senate seat. However, he decided not to run. He instead supported Lee Fisher in the election.
Later in 2009, voters in Cuyahoga County changed how their government worked. They decided to have an elected county executive instead of county commissioners.
