About the Peter Parker House
The Peter Parker House is in Washington D.C. It stands near Lafayette Square, a well-known park. It is a brick building with an Italianate style. This means it looks like buildings from old Italy.
The house has three stories. It has a fancy wooden edge at the top of its roof. The front of the house has three sections. The main door is on the right side. You reach it by walking up a few steps. The doorway has stone decorations around it. The window sills and tops are also made of stone.
History of the Building
This house was built in 1860. Its first famous owner was Peter Parker. He was a doctor who worked as a missionary in China.
In 1910, a new group bought the house. This group was called the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. A very rich man named Andrew Carnegie started this group. He wanted to help stop wars around the world. He hoped to promote peace between countries.
The Carnegie Endowment used this house as its main office. They stayed there until 1948. After that, they moved their headquarters to New York City. While they were in Washington, the group also bought the houses next door. They expanded their offices into those buildings too.
Later, from 1961 to 1965, a group used the house to celebrate the American Civil War. By 1970, the United States government bought the building. In the early 1980s, this house and the one next to it were joined together. They became part of Blair House. This was done by building a connection between them.
