Peter Westbury (born May 26, 1938 – died December 7, 2015) was a British racing driver from England. He was famous for being a two-time champion in hill climb racing. He also took part in two World Championship Formula One Grand Prix races. Peter was known for building and developing his own special racing cars.

Early Racing Days

Peter Westbury started his racing career with a car he built himself, called the M.G.W. Later, he drove a Cooper car. He even put a powerful Daimler V8 engine into it in 1960!

King of the Hills

Peter Westbury became a champion in hill climb racing. This is a type of race where drivers compete to drive up a steep hill as fast as they can. He won the championship twice, in 1963 and 1964.

  • In 1963, he won with his own car, the Felday. It had a supercharged Daimler V8 engine.
  • The next year, 1964, he won with a very special car called the Ferguson P99. This car was unusual because it had four-wheel-drive! He even drove the Ferguson P99 in the 1964 Brighton Speed Trials and in some drag races. In one drag race, the car covered a quarter mile in just 11.01 seconds!

Building Awesome Cars

Peter Westbury loved to build and improve his own racing cars.

  • In 1965, he created the Felday-BRM 4 sports car, which also had four-wheel-drive. This car won its very first race at Brands Hatch in December 1965.
  • Another car, the Felday 5, was built with a huge 7-litre Ford Galaxie engine and four-wheel-drive, but it only raced a few times.
  • He also built the Felday 6, a powerful single-seater car with a 4.7-litre Ford engine, for another driver named Tony Griffiths.

Formula Three Success

In 1967, Peter Westbury raced a Brabham-Ford car in Formula Three races. He won several important races that year:

  • He won at the Silverstone circuit in England.
  • He also won the Grand Prix des Frontières in Belgium.
  • He won at the Auvergne Trophy meeting on the challenging Clermont-Ferrand track in France.

That same year, he helped bring back an old four-wheel-drive BRM P67 Formula One car for another driver, David Good, to use in the British Hill Climb Championship. This car did very well and even won the championship in 1968 with a different driver.

Formula One Adventures

Peter Westbury competed in two World Championship Formula One Grand Prix races.

  • In 1969, he raced a Formula 2 Brabham car in the 1969 German Grand Prix. He finished ninth overall and was fifth in his Formula 2 class.
  • In 1970, he tried to qualify for the 1970 United States Grand Prix with a BRM team car. However, his engine broke, and he was not able to start the race.

Peter Westbury did not score any championship points in Formula One.
