Petko Jordanov Christov was an important religious leader in Bulgaria. He was a Roman Catholic bishop who served the Nicopolis region. He was also a member of the Franciscan order, a group of priests and brothers who follow the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Early Life and Education

Petko Jordanov Christov was born in a village called Velchevo, in the Veliko Tarnovo area of Bulgaria. He was born on October 9, 1950. As a young man, he studied at a special school in Veliko Tarnovo. There, he learned about civil engineering and architecture.

Becoming a Priest and Bishop

From 1977 to 1985, Petko Christov studied to become a priest in Bulgaria. He was ordained as a priest on December 15, 1985, by Bishop Samuel Dzhundrin. In 1990, he joined the Franciscan order. He made his first promises to the order on December 15, 1993.

He worked as a priest in the towns of Belene and Tranchovitsa. On October 18, 1994, he was chosen to become the Bishop of Nicopolis. He was officially made a bishop by Pope John Paul II on January 6, 1995. This special ceremony took place at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City.

His Work with Caritas

Petko Christov was very involved in helping people. From 1992 to 1993, he helped start a charity organization called Caritas in Belene. Caritas is a worldwide Catholic charity that helps people in need.

Since 1997, Bishop Christov was the president of Caritas in Bulgaria. He was also a member of the Episcopal Conference of Bulgaria. This is a group of bishops who work together to guide the Catholic Church in Bulgaria. On December 1, 2001, he was re-elected as the president of Caritas Bulgaria.

Later Life and Passing

Bishop Christov was also the head of several important church committees in Bulgaria. These committees dealt with topics like religious life and promoting unity among Christians.

After a period of illness, Bishop Christov passed away on September 14, 2020. He was 69 years old. He died in a hospital in the city of Ruse, Bulgaria. He was buried in a special chapel in the cathedral in Ruse on September 19, 2020.

Awards and Honors

Bishop Christov received an important award called the Order pro merito Melitensi. This award was given to him by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. This is a very old Catholic order that does a lot of charitable work around the world. He received the award on November 30, 2011. It was given to him for his active work and cooperation with the charitable activities of the Catholic Church in Bulgaria.
