Pewaukee is a village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2020, about 8,238 people lived there. The village is almost completely surrounded by the City of Pewaukee. It was once part of the Town of Pewaukee before becoming its own village.

History of Pewaukee

The area where Pewaukee village now stands was first settled around 1837. A man named Deacon Asa Clark from Lunenburg, Vermont helped start the community. He built a hotel, a sawmill, and a church.

Pewaukee officially became a town in 1840. Later, in 1876, it became a village.

What Does "Pewaukee" Mean?

The name "Pewaukee" comes from the word aki or (w)aukee. This word means "land" or "location" in several Algonquian languages, which are spoken by many Native American tribes.

The exact meaning of the first part of the name is not fully known. Some ideas for what "Pewaukee" might mean include:

  • "Watery place" (from the Ojibwe word nibiwaki)
  • "The dusty water" or "lake of shells" (from the Potawatomi word pee-wauk-ee-wee-nick)
  • "Place of flint" (from the Menominee word pee-wau-nau-kee)

Other possible meanings are "snail lake" or "clean land."

The United States Census Bureau says that the village covers a total area of about 4.53 square miles (11.73 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 4.13 square miles (10.70 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.40 square miles (1.04 square kilometers), is water.

In 2010, the village of Pewaukee had 8,166 people living there. There were 3,903 households and 2,043 families. The population density was about 1,977 people per square mile (763 people per square kilometer).

Most of the people living in Pewaukee were White (92.4%). Other groups included Asian (3.9%), African American (1.1%), and Native American (0.2%). About 3.5% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

The average age of people in the village was 41.4 years. About 20.8% of residents were under 18 years old.

Pewaukee is home to several businesses. One of them is Dynex/Rivett Inc., which makes parts for hydraulic systems. Another company, Logic Design Corporation, develops special software for engineering and manufacturing. PM Plastics, a company that makes custom plastic parts, is also located here.

The village also has a special place called the Old Main Street building on Wisconsin Avenue. It opened in 2002 and looks like a charming building from the late 1800s. It is located across from the beach on Pewaukee Lake. This building houses many small businesses, including:
