Lunenburg is a town located in Essex County, Vermont, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,246 people lived there. This makes it the most populated town in Essex County.

History of Lunenburg

Lunenburg was officially given its name on July 5, 1763. This happened when Benning Wentworth, who was the royal governor of New Hampshire, approved it. He granted the land to David Page and 68 other people.

Many people believe that David Page chose the town's name. It is thought to come from a title of Prince Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand of Brunswick-Lunenburg.

A famous person from Lunenburg was Adino Nye Bell. He served as a Vermont State Representative, which means he helped make laws for the state. Lunenburg is also said to have inspired a poem by the famous writer Robert Frost. His poem, "The Mountain," is set in a town called Lunenburg.

Geography and Nature

Lunenburg is in the southern part of Essex County. It sits along the Connecticut River, which forms the border between Vermont and New Hampshire. To its west is the town of Concord. To the northwest is Victory. At its northern tip is Granby, and to the northeast is Guildhall. All these towns are in Vermont.

Across the Connecticut River, to the east, is Lancaster, New Hampshire. To the south is Dalton, New Hampshire. U.S. Route 2 is a main road that goes through the middle of Lunenburg. It leads west to St. Johnsbury and east to Lancaster.

The Mount Orne Covered Bridge is in the eastern part of Lunenburg. This historic bridge crosses the Connecticut River into South Lancaster, New Hampshire.

Lunenburg covers about 118.6 square kilometers (about 45.8 square miles) in total. Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. Neal Pond, located north of the town center, is the biggest body of water. There are also four brooks: Neal Brook, Mink Brook, Catbow Brook, and Hudson Brook.
