The town we know today as Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo was formed in 1927. It came about when two smaller towns, Peñarroya and Pueblonuevo del Terrible, joined together.

The name Pueblonuevo del Terrible has an interesting story. It comes from a very brave dog that once lived there. According to the legend, this dog was nicknamed "Terrible" because of its fierce nature. This special dog is said to have discovered the first pieces of coal in the area.

Peñarroya During the Spanish Civil War

Towards the end of the Spanish Civil War, a significant event called the Battle of Peñarroya took place near the town. This battle happened between January 5 and February 4, 1939. The town was located close to the front line of the war in Extremadura.
