The Phelsuma quadriocellata is a type of gecko often called the "Peacock Day Gecko". This amazing reptile lives only in the coastal areas of eastern Madagascar. It is very common and can be found in many places there.

Peacock Day Geckos live in different kinds of habitats. They prefer low and mid-level forests. You can even find them in areas where people live and farm. Sometimes, they like to hang out near certain types of Pandanus plants.

About the Peacock Day Gecko

The Peacock Day Gecko grows to be about 4.7 to 4.8 inches (12 cm) long. This measurement includes its tail. Like many geckos that live in trees, it has special features. It has eyes without eyelids, which is pretty unique! It also has sticky toe pads. These pads help it climb easily.

This gecko is usually a bright green color. It often has small red spots on its body. Its belly is a pale color. Some geckos of this species might even have a blue tail! A special feature of the Peacock Day Gecko is the large dark spots on its sides. Some geckos have two of these spots. Others might have four.

Different Types of Peacock Day Geckos

Scientists believe the Phelsuma quadriocellata might be a group of very similar species. This is called a species complex. Right now, it is divided into three main types, which are called subspecies:

  • P. q. quadriocellata
  • P. q. lepida
  • P. q. bimaculata

There used to be a fourth type. But scientists recently decided it was different enough to be its own species. It is now called Phelsuma parva.

Peacock Day Geckos as Pets

Sometimes, people keep the Peacock Day Gecko as a pet. They are interesting animals to care for. However, collecting these geckos for pets is not a problem. It does not threaten their numbers in the wild.
