The Phenes raptor is a fascinating type of dragonfly found in Chile and other parts of South America. It's known for being the biggest dragonfly in Chile! This amazing insect is a skilled hunter, catching other smaller creatures for food. Young Phenes raptor (called larvae) have been found near the Malleco River and even in a farm mill. Adult dragonflies have been seen in many other places across Chile. Interestingly, the Phenes raptor is the only species in its entire group, or genus, making it quite unique!

What Does the Phenes raptor Look Like?
The Phenes raptor belongs to a group of dragonflies in Chile that share similar features. These dragonflies have hindwings that measure about 35 to 52 millimeters long. They usually have bodies that are thin but also a bit stubby, and they are often a light yellow color.
Face and Eyes
Their faces are black, with a thin line just above their mouth. Their eyes are set far apart. These eyes eventually connect with a small dot or point in the middle of their face.
Wings and Markings
The wings of the Phenes raptor are not perfectly symmetrical. The front wing often has a triangle shape that is divided into two or three smaller sections. You might also see a few dots along the edge of the wing. The female dragonflies do not have certain veins connecting their stigma (a colored spot on the wing) to other parts of their body.
Body Details
The Phenes raptor has a well-developed frons (the front part of its head). This frons has a slight groove running down its length, which divides it a little. The dragonfly's abdomen (the long back part of its body) has cool patterns that look like leaves. Some of these dragonflies have small, red claws that they can pull back. Their red thorax (the middle part of their body where wings and legs attach) has two yellow stripes and is covered in tiny, white hairs.
Male Dragonflies
Male Phenes raptor dragonflies have small appendages (which are like little tails) at the end of their body. These appendages often have three or four small, triangle-shaped sections made of cells. There's also a tiny notch near the tip of these appendages. Veins connect the anus (the end of their digestive system) to their hindwings.
