Philip of Orléans was born on July 1, 1336. He was a French prince and an important figure in his time. Philip was the fifth son of King Philip VI of France and Queen Joan the Lame.
In 1344, his father gave him the title of Duke of Orléans. This was a brand new duchy created just for him. Philip also held the titles of Duke of Touraine and Count of Valois.
His Family and Marriage
On January 8, 1345, Philip married his second-cousin, Blanche of France. Blanche was born on April 1, 1328. She was the daughter of King Charles IV of France and Joan of Évreux. Philip and Blanche did not have any children together.
Philip did have two sons and one daughter from relationships outside of his marriage. One of his sons, Louis d'Orléans, later became an important church leader. He served as the Bishop of Poitiers and then the Bishop of Beauvais. His daughter, Marie d'Orléans, married a nobleman named Gédéon V of Beauvilliers.
A Time as a Hostage
During his life, Philip played a role in the politics between France and England. After the Treaty of Brétigny was signed, he went to England. He served as a guest or prisoner there for a while. This was to help ensure that his brother, King John II of France, would follow the terms of the peace treaty. He was later allowed to return to France.
Philip of Orléans passed away on September 1, 1375, in Orléans. Since he did not have any children from his marriage, his titles and lands went back to the royal family of France.
