Philip Christopher England was born on April 30, 1951. He is a British geophysicist. A geophysicist studies the Earth using physics. Philip England used to be a top professor of geology at the University of Oxford.
His main work focuses on how mountain ranges form and change over time. He also studies how island arcs develop. Island arcs are chains of volcanoes that form above a subducting tectonic plate.
Philip England uses math to understand how mountains are built. He has shown that mountains act like very thick, slow-moving liquids.
Early Life and Learning
Philip England was born in 1951. He went to the University of Bristol to study physics. He earned his first degree in physics in 1972.
After that, he went to the University of Oxford. There, he did more research in geophysics. He earned his advanced degree, called a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil), in 1976.
His Career in Science
Philip England started his science career at the University of Cambridge. He worked there as a research fellow from 1977 to 1981. This means he was a scientist doing special research projects.
From 1981 to 1986, he taught at Harvard University in the United States. He was first an assistant professor, then an associate professor.
In 1986, he came back to the University of Oxford. He became a lecturer in geophysics. He also became a Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford.
In 2000, he became the Chair of Geology. This is a very important teaching position. From 2004 to 2011, he was the head of the Earth Sciences Department.
