Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Stanhope (born August 15, 1714 – died March 7, 1786) was an important person from Great Britain. He was known for his love of math and science.

Philip Stanhope was the son of James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope and Lucy Pitt. When his father passed away in 1721, Philip took over his father's special titles, becoming the 2nd Earl Stanhope. This meant he inherited a position in the British nobility.

A Life of Learning and Discovery

Philip Stanhope had a deep and lasting interest in mathematics throughout his life. He loved to study numbers and solve complex problems.

Joining the Royal Society

In 1735, Philip Stanhope became a member of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group in London for scientists. Being a "Fellow of the Royal Society" (FRS) meant he was recognized for his contributions to science.

Connecting with American Thinkers

Later, in 1774, he was also chosen to be a member of the American Philosophical Society. This group was founded by Benjamin Franklin in America to promote useful knowledge.

Supporting Science and Scientists

Philip Stanhope preferred to spend his time on science and math rather than on politics. He became friends with many famous early scientists, who were sometimes called "natural philosophers." These included Joseph Priestley and Benjamin Franklin. He also supported many mathematicians, helping them with their work. One of these mathematicians was Thomas Bayes, who is famous for his ideas in statistics.

On July 25, 1745, Philip Stanhope married Grizel Hamilton. She was the daughter of Charles Hamilton, Lord Binning.

Philip and Grizel had two sons:

  • Philip Stanhope, Viscount Mahon (born June 24, 1746 – died July 6, 1763).
  • Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope (born August 3, 1753 – died December 15, 1816). Charles later became the 3rd Earl Stanhope after his father.
