Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charles Hamilton, Lord Binning (born 1697 – died 27 December 1732) was a Scottish nobleman, a person from a high-ranking family, who was also involved in politics and wrote poetry.

Life of Lord Binning

Charles Hamilton was the son of Thomas Hamilton, 6th Earl of Haddington, and Helen Hope. From the moment he was born, he was known by the special name Lord Binning. This is called a courtesy title, which means it's a title used by the eldest son of a nobleman, even though he hasn't officially inherited the main title yet.

In 1715, when he was about 18 years old, Lord Binning was with his father at the Battle of Sheriffmuir. This was an important battle in Scottish history.

From 1718 until he died, Lord Binning held an important job called Knight Marischal. This position had been empty since the battle because the previous holder, Earl of Kintore, had lost his title and position.

Lord Binning also became a member of parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's government. He was chosen in the 1722 British general election to represent the area of St Germans in Cornwall, England. He kept this job until the 1727 British general election.

He also played a role in the design of Mellerstain House. This was a large house that his father-in-law, George Baillie of Jerviswood, decided to build. Lord Binning was very interested in how the house and its surrounding lands were planned.

In 1731, Lord Binning's health started to get weaker. He traveled from Britain to Europe with the Baillie family. They settled in Naples, a city in Italy, where he sadly passed away on 27 December 1732.

Family Life

On 3 September 1717, Lord Binning married Rachel Baillie. She was the daughter of George Baillie of Jerviswood and Lady Grisell Baillie. Rachel lived for many years after Lord Binning, passing away in 1773.

Lord Binning and Rachel had several children:
