William Keith, 2nd Earl of Kintore (born in 1660, died on December 5, 1718), was an important Scottish nobleman. An Earl is a high-ranking title in the British peerage system. He inherited this title from his father.

Early Life and Family

William Keith was the only son of John Keith, 1st Earl of Kintore. His mother was Lady Margaret Hamilton. He had two sisters, Lady Jean Keith and Lady Margaret Keith.

His family was well-connected in Scotland. His grandfathers were William Keith, 6th Earl Marischal, and Thomas Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Haddington.

His Career and Role in History

In 1714, William Keith became the Knight Marischal of Scotland. This was a special role in the Scottish royal household.

Lord Kintore was a member of the Tory political group. He also supported the Jacobite cause. The Jacobites wanted to bring back the House of Stuart to the thrones of England, Ireland, and Scotland.

In 1715, he took part in the 1715 rising. This was an attempt by James Francis Edward Stuart to become king. William Keith fought in the Battle of Sheriffmuir during this uprising. Because he was involved, he lost his position as Knight Marischal.

After his father passed away in April 1715, William Keith became the 2nd Earl of Kintore.

His Family Life

Before August 8, 1687, William Keith married the Honourable Catherine Murray. She was the eldest daughter of David Murray, 4th Viscount of Stormont.

William and Catherine had three children:

  • John Keith, 3rd Earl of Kintore (1699–1758). He later married Mary Erskine.
  • William Keith, 4th Earl of Kintore (1701–1761). He never married.
  • Lady Catherine Margaret Keith. She married David Falconer, 4th Lord Falconer of Halkerton.

Lord Kintore died on December 5, 1718. His oldest son, John, took over his title as the 3rd Earl of Kintore.

The Kintore Title After His Death

When William Keith's youngest son, the 4th Earl, died in 1761, the Earldom of Kintore faced a challenge. The title should have gone to his cousin, George Keith, 10th Earl Marischal. However, George Keith had been punished for his part in the 1715 rising. This punishment meant he could not inherit titles.

So, the Earldom of Kintore was put on hold. It remained suspended until George Keith, the 10th Earl Marischal, died in 1778. After that, the title was passed to Anthony Adrian Falconer. He was a grandson of William Keith's daughter, Lady Catherine. Anthony then became the 5th Earl of Kintore.
