Philippe Etchebest's Journey as a Chef
Early Life and Choosing Cooking
Philippe Etchebest grew up around food. His dad owned a restaurant in Bordeaux, France. Philippe's family even lived right above the restaurant! When he was young, he was also very active. He played rugby for a club called Bègles-Bordeaux. He also practiced judo, which is a type of martial art.
When he was 15, Philippe had a big choice to make. He could either become a professional rugby player or a chef. He decided to follow his passion for cooking. He went to a special cooking school in Talence Bordeaux to learn all about being a chef.
Becoming a Top Chef
Philippe worked very hard. By the time he was 22, he was already a second chef at a restaurant in Paris. This restaurant was called Clos Longchamps. Later, in 1992, he moved to another restaurant in Toulouse.
He then became the head chef at a place called Château Grand Barrail. He worked there for five years. In the year 2000, he won a very important award. It was called Meilleur Ouvrier de France. This award means he was one of the best craftspeople in France!
In 2001, Philippe moved to Château des Reynats. Here, he earned his first Michelin star. This is a huge honor for a chef. In 2003, he joined the Hostellerie de Plaisance in Saint-Emilion. This restaurant already had one Michelin star. Philippe kept that star and then earned a second one in 2008!
Chef on Television
Philippe Etchebest also became famous on TV. In 2011, he started hosting a cooking show called Cauchemar en cuisine. This show is like the French version of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. On the show, Philippe visits restaurants that are having trouble. He helps them fix their problems. He likes to be surprised when he visits, so his reactions are real!
Since 2015, he has also been a judge on the French version of Top Chef. This is a popular show where chefs compete against each other.
