Philippe Garrel (born April 6, 1948) is a famous French movie director. He also works as a cinematographer (who films the movie), a screenwriter (who writes the story), a film editor (who puts the scenes together), and a producer (who helps make the movie happen). He is known for his work in the French New Wave movement, which was a new style of filmmaking in France. His movies have won many important awards at big film festivals like Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and Berlin Film Festival.
Early Life and First Films
Philippe Garrel was born in a town called Boulogne-Billancourt, France, in 1948. His father, Maurice Garrel, was an actor. This meant Philippe grew up around movies and acting.
He became very interested in filmmaking when he was young. He was inspired by other famous French directors like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. Philippe started making his own movies at a very young age. When he was just 16, he wrote and directed his first film, called Les Enfants désaccordés, in 1964.
Awards and Recognition
Philippe Garrel has won many awards for his movies. These awards show how much people appreciate his unique filmmaking style.
- In 1982, he won the Prix Jean Vigo for his movie L'Enfant secret.
- At the Cannes Film Festival in 1984, he received the Perspectives du Cinéma Award for his film Liberté, la nuit.
- He has also been recognized many times at the Venice Film Festival, which is one of the oldest film festivals in the world.
- In 1991, he won a Silver Lion for his movie J'entends plus la guitare. The Silver Lion is a very important award for directors.
- His film Le Vent de la nuit was nominated for the Golden Lion in 1999. The Golden Lion is the top prize at the Venice Film Festival.
- In 2001, his movie Sauvage Innocence was also nominated for the Golden Lion. It also won the FIPRESCI Prize, which is given by film critics.
- In 2005, he won another Silver Lion, this time for Best Director, for his film Les Amants réguliers.
- Most recently, in 2023, he won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival for his movie The Plough.
Family Life
Philippe Garrel has two children who are also actors: Louis Garrel and Esther Garrel. Their mother is actress Brigitte Sy.
Philippe Garrel is currently married to actress and writer Caroline Deruas.
