Philippe Garrel (born 6 April 1948) is a famous French director. He also works as a cinematographer, screenwriter, film editor, and producer. He is known for his connection to the French New Wave movement, which was a new style of filmmaking in France. His movies have won many important awards at film festivals like Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and Berlin Film Festival.

Early Life and First Films
Philippe Garrel was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, in 1948. His father, Maurice Garrel, was an actor. Philippe's brother, Thierry Garrel, became a film producer.
Philippe became interested in movies at a young age. He was inspired by the new and exciting films made by directors like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. When he was just 16 years old, Garrel wrote and directed his very first film. It was called Les Enfants désaccordés and was made in 1964.

Awards in the 1980s
In 1982, he won the Prix Jean Vigo for his film L'Enfant secret. This award is given to young directors for their unique style. In 1984, he won the Perspectives du Cinéma Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his 1983 film Liberté, la nuit.
Awards at Venice Film Festival
Over ten years, Garrel earned a lot of praise at the Venice Film Festival.
- In 1991, he won a Silver Lion for his film J'entends plus la guitare. This film was also nominated for the top award, the Golden Lion.
- Le Vent de la nuit was nominated for a Golden Lion in 1999.
- Two years later, his film Sauvage Innocence was nominated for a Golden Lion and won the FIPRESCI Prize.
- In 2005, his film Les Amants réguliers won him the Silver Lion for Best Director.
Awards at Berlin Film Festival
Most recently, in 2023, Garrel won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival for his film The Plough.
Family and Collaborations
In 1968, Garrel worked with actress Anne Bourguignon on his film Anémone. She later used the film's title as her stage name.
In 1969, Garrel met German singer and actress Nico. She performed a song for his film Le Lit de la Vierge. They worked together on several films. Nico starred in his 1972 film The Inner Scar, which also featured her son, Christian. Songs from the movie's soundtrack were even included on Nico's music album Desertshore.
Philippe Garrel has two children with actress Brigitte Sy: Louis Garrel and Esther Garrel. Both Louis and Esther have become actors, following in their family's footsteps. Philippe Garrel is currently married to actress and writer Caroline Deruas.
