Philippe Rahmy (born June 5, 1965, in Geneva, Switzerland – died October 1, 2017) was a talented Swiss poet and writer. He was known for his amazing books and his work in photography and filmmaking. Philippe also used his voice to help people with disabilities.

About Philippe Rahmy

Philippe Rahmy studied art history and ancient Egyptian culture at the École du Louvre in Paris. He also earned degrees in literature and philosophy from the University of Lausanne.

He helped start a well-known French website called remue.net. This site focused on sharing new literature online and through live events. Philippe's books were published in many countries, including France, the USA, Italy, Switzerland, and China.

Philippe Rahmy was also a skilled photographer and made award-winning short films. He had a condition called Osteogenesis imperfecta, which means his bones were very fragile and could break easily. Because of this, he was an active member of groups that supported people with disabilities. He even wrote songs for a rock band called "I need my gasoline."

He was working on a cool project about abandoned cities. This project, called The Abandoned City, was a team effort. It started on a website called D-FICTION and was planned to become its own special platform. This platform would let people explore virtual landscapes, create art, and communicate. It was meant to bring together writing, visual arts, music, and even street art.

Short Films

Philippe Rahmy was also a director and producer of independent short films. His films were shown and enjoyed around the world.

  • In 2011, his film "The Body remains" was chosen for the Uplink Factory video festival in Tokyo, Japan.
  • In 2010, "M.R.I." was shown at the Gallery Arts-en-l'Ile in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • In 2009, "The Body remains" won a Special Prize from the Jury at the Oblò Underground Short Film Festival in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • "M.R.I." was also shown at the Museum of Modern Arts (MAMCO) in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2009.
  • In 2008, "The Body remains" was officially selected for the Festival Côté Court in Pantin, France, and for Un festival c'est trop court in Nice, France.
  • "The Body remains" was even selected for exhibition at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival in New York City in 2008.

Photography Work

Philippe Rahmy's photos often focused on the human body and what people consider "normal."

  • In 2011, his photo series "The Glory of the Body" was exhibited at Photovision in Athens, Greece. It later became part of the Athens School of Fine Arts collection.
  • His work "Body & Norm" was featured in China Dolls Magazine in Beijing, China, in 2010.
  • His photos were part of the Universal Exposition of Shanghai in 2010, in a display called "Immobility and Movement."

Screenwriting

Philippe Rahmy also wrote screenplays for films. He helped create Wallman Productions, an independent film and music company based in Hollywood, along with the famous jazz musician Art Johnson.

Philippe Rahmy received many awards and grants for his writing and artistic work:

  • 2010: He received a writing grant from Pro Helvetia.

  • 2011: He was a writer-in-residence at the Shanghai Writers Association, meaning he lived there for a time to focus on his writing.
  • 2013: He received a special mention from the jury for the Prix Wepler Fondation La Poste for Béton armé.
  • 2014: Béton armé was named the best travel story by Lire magazine.
  • 2014: He won the Prix Pittard de l'Andelyn for Béton armé.
  • 2014: He also won the Prix Dentan for Béton armé.
  • 2015: He was a writer-in-residence at Château de Lavigny.
  • 2016: He was a writer-in-residence at the Escuela de Otoño de Traducción Literaria en Lenguas Vivas in Buenos Aires.
  • 2016: He won the Prix Eugène-Rambert for Allegra.
  • 2017: He received the Swiss Literature Awards for Allegra.
  • 2017: He was a writer-in-residence at the Fondation Jan Michalski pour l'écriture et la littérature in Montricher, Switzerland.
