Phinney Ridge is a cool neighborhood in north central Seattle, Washington, United States. It's named after a long hill, or "ridge," that runs north and south. This ridge separates two other areas: Ballard and Green Lake. It stretches from about N. 45th Street to N. 80th Street.
The ridge, and the neighborhood, got its name from Guy C. Phinney. He was a lumber mill owner and a real estate developer. The city bought his large estate in 1899 and turned it into Woodland Park. Phinney's estate even had a private collection of animals, which later became the western half of the park, now known as the Woodland Park Zoo.

Phinney Ridge is a vibrant community with a rich history and interesting places to explore. It's known for its friendly atmosphere and unique local businesses.
Getting Around Phinney Ridge's Main Streets
Phinney Ridge has clear boundaries that help define its shape. To the east, you'll find Aurora Avenue N. (also known as State Route 99). Beyond this road are Green Lake and the eastern part of Woodland Park.
To the north, N. 75th Street marks the edge, with the Greenwood neighborhood just beyond. On the west side, 8th Avenue N.W. separates Phinney Ridge from Ballard. To the south, N. 50th and Market Streets are the boundaries, leading to the Fremont and Wallingford neighborhoods.
The main street in Phinney Ridge is Phinney Avenue N. This road runs along the top of the ridge, especially south of N. 67th Street. North of N. 67th Street, the main road shifts slightly west and becomes Greenwood Avenue N. This busy route is home to many small businesses and shops, making it a great place to walk around.
The Phinney Neighborhood Association
Along Phinney Avenue N., you'll find the Phinney Neighborhood Association. This important community hub is located at the corner of Phinney and 67th Street. It has been in the former John B. Allen Elementary School building since 1981. The school itself was built way back in 1904, closing its doors as a school before becoming a community center.
Amazing Animals of Phinney Ridge
The wildlife in the Phinney Ridge area, especially near Woodland Park, is often a topic of conversation. For example, at least two groups of Coyotes, each with 8 to 15 members, are known to live here. They often hunt the large number of domestic rabbits that also used to live in the park until February 2006. It's a reminder that even in a city, nature is always nearby!
