Physalaemus santafecinus is a type of frog that lives in South America. It is sometimes called the Santa Fe frog. This frog belongs to a family of frogs known as Leptodactylidae.

About the Santa Fe Frog

This small frog was first described in 1965. It is a unique creature that plays a part in its local environment. Like all frogs, it starts its life as a tadpole in water. Then it grows into an adult frog.

Where Does the Santa Fe Frog Live?

The Santa Fe frog can be found in Argentina. It might also live in Paraguay, but scientists are still checking this. Its favorite places to live are:

  • Temperate grasslands, which are open areas with lots of grass.
  • Lakes that sometimes dry up and then fill with water again.
  • Marshes (wetlands) that also dry up and refill.
  • Pastureland, which is land used for grazing animals like cows.

These places provide the frog with food, water, and shelter.

Why Is the Santa Fe Frog in Danger?

Sadly, the Santa Fe frog is facing a big problem. Its main threat is habitat loss. This means the places where it lives are disappearing. When grasslands are turned into farms or cities, the frogs lose their homes. When lakes and marshes are drained, they lose their breeding grounds. This makes it harder for the frogs to survive and have babies. Scientists are working to protect these important habitats.
