Pierluigi Cera was born on February 25, 1941. He is a former Italian footballer. He played as a midfielder or a defender. Cera is best known for his time with Cagliari. He also played for the Italy national football team.

Playing for Clubs

Cera was born in Legnago, Italy. He started his club career with Verona. He played there from 1957 to 1964. His first game in Italy's top league, Serie A, was on May 4, 1958. Verona lost 2-0 to Milan in that match.

After Verona, Cera joined Cagliari in 1964. He played for Cagliari until 1973. During his time there, he became the captain. In the 1970 season, he led Cagliari to win the Serie A title. This was a huge achievement. It was the first and only league title in Cagliari's history.

Later, Cera moved to Cesena. He played there from 1973 to 1979. He had a long and successful career in Italian football.

Playing for Italy

Pierluigi Cera also played for the Italy national football team. He earned 18 caps (appearances) for his country. His first game for Italy was on November 22, 1969. Italy won 3-0 against East Germany in a World Cup qualifier.

Cera was part of the Italian squad for the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. He played in the final match against Brazil. Italy finished in second place after losing 4-1 to Brazil. Playing in a World Cup final is a very big deal for any footballer.

How He Played

Pierluigi Cera was a very flexible player. He could play in different positions on the field. He was good as a midfield playmaker. This meant he helped create scoring chances for his team. He was also a strong defender.

In his later career, he often played as a "Libero" or "sweeper". This was a special defensive role. A sweeper plays behind the main defenders. They "sweep up" any loose balls or cover for teammates. Cera was good at this because he had great vision. He could see the whole field. He was also good at passing the ball. He could bring the ball out from the back of the field. This made him one of the first "offensive sweepers" of his time.
