Pierre Womé's Club Career
Pierre Womé started his football journey in Cameroon, playing for youth teams like Fogape Yaoundé and Canon Yaoundé. In the summer of 1996, he moved to Italy to begin his professional career.
Early Years in Italy and England
Womé started playing for Vicenza Calcio. He spent almost seven years playing in Italy for various clubs. In August 2002, he moved to England to join Premier League team Fulham. While playing for Fulham, Womé scored one goal in a league match against West Brom in February 2003.
Moving Around Europe
After his time in England, Womé played for several well-known clubs. These included RCD Espanyol in Spain, Inter Milan in Italy, and Werder Bremen in Germany. In the summer of 2008, he joined 1. FC Köln in Germany and stayed there until June 2010.
Return to Cameroon and Later Clubs
In February 2012, Womé returned to his home country, Cameroon, to play for Coton Sport FC de Garoua. From 2012 to 2014, he played for his former youth club, Canon Yaoundé.
In January 2014, he moved to UMS de Loum, another team in Cameroon's top league. However, he left the club after not playing any matches. Later that year, he joined Renaissance de Ngoumou. In September 2014, Womé signed with FC Chambly in France. In 2015, he joined US Roye-Noyon, a French fourth-tier team, before ending his playing career.
Pierre Womé's International Career
Pierre Womé was a very important player for the Cameroon national team as a left-back during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Winning Titles with Cameroon
He was a key part of the teams that won the Africa Cup of Nations two times in a row, in 2000 and 2002. He also helped Cameroon win the Olympic gold medal in 2000. All three of these big tournaments were won after penalty shoot-outs. Womé took a penalty in all three of these victories. In the Olympic gold medal match, he scored the fifth and winning penalty, securing the gold medal for his country. He also scored a penalty in the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Womé also played as Cameroon's main left-back in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments.
A Memorable Penalty Kick
On October 8, 2005, Womé had a difficult moment during a World Cup qualifying match against Egypt. In the last moments of the game, he missed a penalty kick that would have sent Cameroon to the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The shot hit the post, and the match ended in a 1–1 draw. Because of this, the Ivory Coast qualified for the World Cup instead of Cameroon. Womé later shared that some fans were very upset about the miss.
Womé announced his retirement from international football in March 2007. However, he later returned to the team in 2009 for a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification match.
Life After Playing Football
In March 2017, after he stopped playing, Pierre Womé was appointed as the sporting director for Canon Yaoundé. This means he helps manage the club's sports activities and players.
