Pieter Burman (born October 23, 1713, died June 24, 1778) was a very smart Dutch scholar. He was known as "the Younger" to tell him apart from his uncle, who was also named Pieter Burman. Pieter Burman the Younger was a philologist. This means he studied old languages and texts, like those from ancient Greece and Rome. He spent his life teaching and writing about these subjects.

His Life and Studies

Pieter Burman was born in Amsterdam. His uncle raised him in Leiden. He later went to Utrecht to study law and philology. He learned from important teachers there.

Becoming a Professor

In 1735, Pieter Burman became a professor. He taught about public speaking and history at Franeker. A few years later, in 1741, he also started teaching poetry.

The next year, he moved to Amsterdam. There, he became a professor of history and philology. This was at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam. He continued to take on more roles. He became a professor of poetry in 1744. Later, he was the main librarian in 1752. He also became an inspector for the gymnasium (a type of school) in 1753.

Later Years and Retirement

Pieter Burman worked hard for many years. He retired in 1777. He passed away on June 24, 1778, near Wassenaar.

His Important Works

Pieter Burman was very much like his famous uncle. He studied similar things and had a strong personality. He was known for his vast knowledge. He was also very talented at writing Latin poetry.

  • Anthologia Veterum Latinorum Epigrammatum et Poematum (1759–1763)
  • Aristophanis comoediae Novem (1760)
  • Rhetorica

He also finished editing some books that his uncle had started. These included works by the famous Roman poets Vergil (finished in 1767) and Claudian (finished in 1760). He began editing another work by Propertius. This was one of his best projects. However, it was only half-printed when he died. Another scholar, L. van Santen, finished it. It was published in 1780.
